Sometimes, students in Little Leaders (karate for 3-year-olds) don’t have the strongest of starts. It’s tough being 3 sometimes 😅 Their parents ask if it’s normal when they won’t participate in the kicks, moves, and other activities.

Then I usually tell them about Aakash…who started karate when he was barely 3 years old, and for the first 6 months of Little Leaders, REFUSED to even wear a uniform 😂.

Aakash, who is now five, can perform a beautiful kata, loves to spar with his friends in class, and has even competed in a few tournaments, all while having fun at the same time!

The truth is that in order to execute the moves correctly and achieve success in karate, students (of ANY age) need to be able to focus and concentrate on what they’re doing. And that is EXACTLY WHY students who start at the raw age of 3 or 4 can out-focus and out-perform their peers, both in karate class and in the real world… in school, at birthday parties, at home, even at the grocery store.

So recently, we had the idea to get Aakash in a video, so that the next time a Little Leader parent asked us “if their kid who won’t do XYZ is normal,” I can just show them this video and give them hope ❤️…

Here are five benefits of karate that your 3-year-old can experience by attending Little Leaders classes:

Discipline: Martial arts training instills discipline in children from a young age. They learn to follow rules and respect authority figures such as their instructors. They learn control and order and learn to apply it to everyday situations, like being told to brush their teeth or put their tablets away (yes, we know the struggle, mom!)

Coordination: Martial arts help to develop coordination and fine motor skills in 3-year-olds (and even younger toddlers). Kicking, punching, and moving in different directions all help to improve your child’s coordination.

It’s important to build a child’s motor skills early so they can excel in school and other activities. *cough* *cough* like karate 😉

Fitness: We all know that childhood obesity is a problem in the United States. According to the CDC, one in five children ages six to eleven are obese. Martial arts can help combat this by teaching your child healthy habits and instilling a love for physical activity at a young age. Martial arts training is also super great exercise for kids! It helps to improve their stamina, flexibility, and strength. And it’s a fun way for them to burn off all that extra energy (we know they have a lot of it!).

Confidence: One of the most important benefits of karate for toddlers is the confidence it builds in them. They learn they can achieve anything they set their minds to, whether it’s learning a new move or earning their next belt.

This was evident with Aakash when he told Master Alley he could not have the glasses and that he would “think about it for two days” LOL!

Fun: Last but not least, karate is just plain fun! Kids love the excitement of learning new techniques and showing off their skills to their friends and family.
